HomeWatering in Summer
Watering a Garden in Cyprus in Summer
From June to September almost no rain falls in Cyprus, and a garden depends completely on irrigation. Watering correctly matters more than watering a lot: too much water kills as many plants as too little.
The guide below is a starting point. Soil, shade, wind and the age of the plants all change what a particular garden needs.

The Best Time to Water
Water early in the morning, before sunrise if the system is automatic. The water soaks in before the heat, less is lost to evaporation and the leaves dry quickly, which keeps fungus away. Evening is second best. Watering in the middle of the day wastes most of the water.
How Often to Water
- Lawns: every day or every other day in midsummer
- Newly planted trees and shrubs: every one to two days in their first summer
- Established shrubs and hedges: two or three times a week
- Established trees: once or twice a week, deeply
- Pots and planters: every day, sometimes twice in a heatwave
- Drought-tolerant plants such as olive, lavender and rosemary: little, once they are established
Water Deeply, Not Often
A long, slow watering that reaches deep into the soil is better than a short one every day. It draws roots downwards, where the soil stays cool and moist. Short daily sprinkles keep roots near the surface, where they dry out first.
Saving Water
Use drip irrigation for everything except the lawn, cover the soil with mulch or gravel to keep the moisture in, group plants by how much water they need and check the system every month for leaks and blocked drippers. Change the timer with the seasons: a setting that is right for August is far too much in October. Follow any water restrictions announced for your area.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I am overwatering?
Yellow leaves that drop, soft growth, fungus and soil that is always wet are the usual signs. Dig a few centimetres down: if the soil is still damp, do not water yet.
Should the irrigation run in winter?
Much less. In a normal winter the rain is enough for established plants, and the system can be turned down or off and used only in dry spells.
